Plant Spacing

“How many plants fill this bed, and how far apart?”

How many plants fill the bed — laid out row by row and drawn to scale, not estimated by dividing one area by another. Plus the exact 15.47% that staggered rows fit in over a square grid, and why it never matches the number on the label.

  • Rectangle, circle, or just the area — with the layout drawn plant by plant
  • Square grid against staggered rows, both densities side by side
  • Gets the row spacing right: 0.866 × the plant spacing, which trips people up
  • Edge allowance handled properly, because that's what decides four rows or five
  • Costs both patterns, so you can see what the extra 15% is worth

How it works

Three steps, then you're done

Put in the bed

Width and depth, or the diameter, or just the area.

Set the spacing

Presets for bedding, perennials, shrubs and hedging.

Read the count

And the picture, which shows you where the rows actually land.

Nothing you type ever leaves your computer. There is no account, no login and no server. Switch your wi-fi off and it still works — that's not a promise about our policy, it's just how the tool is built.

Questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. Each tool is a single file. Double-click it and it opens in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox — whichever you already have. No account, no password, no software.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Your numbers and files never leave your computer — the tools have no way to send them and no internet connection is needed to run them. You can switch your wi-fi off and they still work.

I'm not good with computers. Is this too hard?

The first thing every tool does is walk you through it in five short screens with pictures. Then there's a button that fills it with example numbers so you can watch it work before touching anything.

Will it work on my phone?

Yes. Email yourself the file and open the attachment, or drop the files in iCloud Drive, Dropbox or Google Drive and open them from there — then they're on every device you own.
